Had a day out in Ely, Cambridgeshire yesterday. Had never been before and included as well as the fantastic Cathederal, a trip around Oliver Cromwell's house.
If you have a passing interest in 17th century history (or any other to be honest) then I would well recommend a day trip. Its only an hour from where I live, so don't know why I hadn't been before?

Had a great day visiting Northumberland's Bamburgh Castle that has a small(but very nice) selection of ECW arms and armour. There is also a superb zischagge helmet with back and breast plate as worn (as it were) by some of the Blinder Cavaliers.
The locals have advised us to watch out for the wicked tricks of the Hedley Kow or Silky of Black Heddon. Apparently it is best to avoid the Wild Hunt and the unpleasant Sir Guy de Ville.

I visited Edinburgh over the weekend and managed to get time to visit The Real Mary King's Close. The guided tour was really entertaining and informative - and packed with C17th history. A Plague Doctor and his Foul Clengers could be found at work and the tour guide told some good spooky tales Well worth a visit.

I go to Edinburgh every year. Mary King's Close is superb. If you go further down the Royal Mile, or Canongate, there is a museum about life in Edinburgh, which is excellent. It shows all about how the tenements worked and what it was all like.
